The Cost Of A Free Meal

February 17, 2011

When told that something is free it is extremely difficult for any band or musician to say no and instead choose to pay for it but unfortunately it usually is the better choice to pay. Anyone who wants to work for free with your band is usually either an amateur or will not be able to give it their full attention or time. The end result is either unusable or will be a hindrance to accomplishing your end goals.

For example you may have a friend who can draw and wants to do your logo for free, sounds like a great deal. The problem arises when you need it by a certain date or show, your friend said they would have it done by the end of the month in time to go on the poster and get a few shirts to sell. Unfortunately they had something come up and it will not be ready in time, this costs you money and potential new fans but because they are a friend you will let it slide.

Finally when it is ready they send you one copy of it in an RGB (a file only used for internet based image, CMYK is used for print) in too low a resolution. Now when you go to print the posters your logo comes out in the wrong colour and is pixellated. Then when you get the right file and print your shirts it looks different from the poster and what people see online which creates confusion.

This is just one example of where it can hurt, sometimes a person is genuinely enthused and wants to do whatever they can to assist you in making it. Do not turn down any offer to your band without looking it over but be wary when someone offers you a deal that sounds too good to be true because it may hurt you in the end.

Great post Hassan, lots of truth to this. I have myself dealt with this type of thing more than a few times, as have some friends and colleagues.

On the flip side, when an established professional wants to work with your band for free, they usually have a grander plan. That’s not to say it wouldn’t be to your benefit to go for the offer, but to be aware that things don’t come free and educate yourself on the deal is important as well.
