Three Tips To Maximize Your Band Presence On Facebook

January 20, 2011

In addition to hostile rants Hassan and I have decided to introduce a few “Band help” articles. To kick things off here are a few quick and easy tips on how you can maximize your band’s presence on facebook.

#1. CUSTOMIZE YOUR URL

Instead of having a lengthy facebook url for your band’s fan page you can create a custom url such as http://www.facebook.com/YourBandName

Step 1: Go to http://www.facebook.com/username/

Step 2: Select the page or account from the pull down menu that you want to set URL for.

Step 3: Type the custom URL name you’ve selected into the box and check availability (Chose carefully as this cannot be changed once set!)

Step 4: Save Page URL name.

*Please note:
You need to be logged into your Facebook account.
You need to have at least 25 fans (people that like your page) to set a custom username/URL

#2. INTERACTIVE WALL

This is a great way to interact better with your fans on your facebook page. Fan Pages are preset so that only what you (the band) post on your wall shows up. For someone to see what your fans are posting they must manually select “Your Band Name + Others” or “Just Others” each time they go to your fan page. To change this you simply:

Step 1: On your Fan Page go to “Edit Page”

Step 2: Select the second tab down “Wall Settings” (This will expand the section)

Step 3: Where it says “Default View for Wall:” Make sure it reads “Posts by Page and Fans” This way when fans post on your wall or tag you by using @Band Name (as mentioned below) it will appear so everyone can see it!!

#3. ‘@’ TAGGING

I’m amazed by how few people are doing this. ‘@’ tagging is a great way to make your posts get more impressions/views and you can tag people, fan pages and events. To do this:

Step 1: Go to the event and hit the ‘SHARE’ button. When the window pops up it will have a space you can write text into.

Step 2: When typing in the Bands names performing use the ‘@’ symbol before the band name. As you start typing a drop down box will appear below and you can select the band. They will then highlight in blue and hyperlink to the bands fan page wall.

[Example: This Friday @Venue, @Band1 will be performing a CD Release show featuring @Band2 and @Band3.]

In this example your post will show up on your wall, on each band fan page you tag (this is why making your wall interactive is important) and the venue fan page. Therefore this will be seen by your friends in their news feed as well as any fans of the other bands and the venue.

*Please note:
You must be a ‘fan’ or ‘like’ them for it to show up in search drop down
You get a max of 6 (six) tags per post.

So simple yet so few bands use the tagging system. Also bands should have a regular check-in on their facebook page and a good biography with contact details.
