Keep That Ball Rolling

January 13, 2011

There is a game made back in 2004 called Katamari Damacy for the Playstation 2, it was a bit of a sleeper hit but has a cult following now. The basic story is that your father the King of All Cosmos gets very drunk and wipes out a large piece of the universe. He then gives you his son the Prince a ball called a Katamari and charges you to collect materials for him to recreate the now missing parts of the universe. Video footage can be seen here (warning music is very catchy).

The point of this is that the Katamari is a special ball that can pick up almost anything but only things that are not much larger than its current size. Each level you slowly pick up small objects and then continually pick up larger and larger objects as your ball grows. This should be the very same actions your band performs in its career. This principle not only applies to how you can pick up fans but also how you can build your support team (such as a publicist, label, manager, booking agent etc.).

Don’t start your band and immediately go looking for all these things at once, start out and look for someone who can help you at your level. As your band grows and there is more work seek out people who can help you at your new found larger size and level. Eventually you will have a large number of fans and people to help you that you might even have enough material to rebuild a part of the universe.
